All smiles

Island General Dentistry enjoyed the welcome treatment Nov. 13 with a traditional ribbon cutting ceremony hosted by the Marco Island Area Chamber of Commerce.

The practice is aligned with Engle Implant Dentistry and the (pending) Island Oral Surgery, situated in the Marco Healthcare Center on Bald Eagle Drive.

On hand were Island General Dentistry’s Dr. Bill Sullivan, and also periodontist and practice owner Dr. Brad Engle, who specializes in implants.

The second floor office suite has patient coverage from Mondays through Thursdays, and a hygienist is available every other Wednesday.

At the ceremony, Dr. Engle said an interactive and educational Web site (dentaledu.tv) aimed at professionals as well as the lay public is under construction. Some content is already available.

Professionals will benefit from the content by being able to view actual surgeries, Engle said.

An Ohio State University as well as Charleston, SC, dental school graduate, Engle and his team of three other dentists have been on Marco since January.

Music at the market

Marketgoers interested in some live entertainment should look no further than the Big Cypress Market Place this weekend.

On Friday evening from 7 to 10 p.m., the band Manhattan Connection plays. Tickets are $10, with parties of six or more receiving a free bottle of wine.

As in Europe, Oktoberfest isn’t limited to that month alone, so the bash — featuring Naples German/Polka band Cat’s Duo — continues at the market from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Then on Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., entertainer Michael Shanaberger appears.

The winery will has wine tastings daily at noon and 2 p.m.

The market is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday through Sunday, with gaming open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

Treat from Trick

Local artist Malenda Trick is pairing with Orion Bank and the Sale e Pepe restaurant to kick off an upcoming series of live paint receptions.

The first will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Dec. 3, with music by GrooveStyle’s Jason DeSimone.

A menu of casual fare items prepared for the event will be available.

Venue is the restaurant’s Toulouse Lounge, which pays tribute to renowned French painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

During the evening, trick will use that inspiration to create a piece of original work. Valet service is free, courtesy of the bank and the Marco Beach Ocean Resort.

Reservations are requested by calling 393-1600.

Here today ...

It can, and does, happen. Through sheer, bottom line business necessity, company employees find themselves without jobs through cuts.

A recently released Department of Labor job loss report revealed that U.S. employment has fallen by 1.2 million in the first 10 months of 2008.

The report suggests it’s important to prepare ahead of time for that possibility.

Among the tips are:

Conserve cash. If one is paying more than the required payment on a mortgage, auto or student loans, pay only the required amount and conserve cash for living expenses.

Assess one’s financial situation by reviewing assets to determine which are the best sources to tap for cash needs. Set up a plan for which assets will be used, and in what order if the unemployment threatens to be lengthy.

Obtain a home equity line of credit. People fearful of losing their jobs, should note they will most likely have to borrow money to see them through.

It is easier, the report says, to get this type of loan while still employed.

Contact one’s mortgage lender as well as credit card companies.

The current situation should be explained. Continuing to run up credit could result in a bankruptcy filing, which would stay on record, making obtaining future loans that much more expensive.

Light invitation

Marco businesses are urged to participate in this year’s Christmas decorating competition, with preliminary judging taking place from 6:30 p.m. to 10:40 p.m., Dec. 8 and 9, and final judging at the same times on Dec. 12.

Business categories are individual and shopping centers. Sponsors are LCEC and Marine Bank.
