Letters To The Editor: Passionate personalities!
Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008
As the almost past president of the Marco Island Chamber of Commerce, I got to know a lot of people in 2008. I attended countless ribbon cutting ceremonies, dozens of meetings, networking events and parties and participated in some sentimental awards ceremonies.
Whether it was new or experienced business people, committed teachers, award winning students, dedicated volunteers or outspoken political figures or just some of the island’s temperamental characters and outspoken letters-to-the-editors writers or bloggers, I enjoyed their insights, camaraderie and their passionate personalities.

Letter To The Editor: Informed it was
Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008
Mr. Dick Adams wrote (Dec. 12) taking issue with my opinion concerning Marco bond insurer’s (MBIA) “bankruptcy” resulting in Marco’s need to self-insure approximately $6.5 million for investor protection.
Mr. Adams felt that MBIA is not bankrupt and that Marco is not self-insured and therefore my opinion is not an informed one. I respectfully disagree.
Bankruptcy is defined as the inability to pay a debt, meet an obligation or perform a contractual agreement. MBIA’s inability to maintain the AAA grading of Marco’s bonds, which is why we contracted with them, clearly meets these tests. However, like Detroit’s auto industries and possibly for similar reasons, MBIA has avoided the protection of a declared legal bankruptcy.

Letter To The Editor: Marco Island ‘under construction’
Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008
I wanted to write and thank the folks on Marco for their patience and kindness.
To those who brought cold drinks out to the guys, that came out and asked questions when they didn’t understand they dynamics of what was going on. To those who opened their homes (Angelo and your lovely wife) and made some of the best meals. A kind word and a smile truly go a long way. Full story »

Letter To The Editor: The humane thing
Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008
Kudos to letter writer Angela Herring. She certainly hit the nail on the head with regard to the needless and unnecessary killing of captured iguanas. Captured iguanas could humanely and easily be relocated elsewhere so they could live out their lives in peace. Full story »
Letter to the Editor: For America’s youth
Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008
Fathers across the country are watching Florida’s new custody provisions (Marco Eagle, It’s The Law, Nov. 14). Shared parental responsibility is not new. Usually it means mom’s share is 86 percent and dad’s share is 14 percent (i.e., every other weekend).

Letter To The Editor: Respect the iguana
Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008
I am horrified. One of the reasons I have always been so proud to live here is the great respect that I thought we had for those who were here before us.
I knew that there was a decision to deplete the number of iguanas on the island, which I never understood, although I am not afraid of reptiles. I did not understand that they would be frozen to death.

Letter To The Editor: Thank you Mr. Keister
Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008
Thank you, Mr. Keister, for being the voice of reason at the last council meeting when you asked for a discussion for delaying the sewer project in light of our difficult economical times. You showed great prudence in recognizing that many in your constituency are struggling financially whether they voted for or against STRP. Full story »
