Optimism frequently leads to disappointment. Frequent disappointment is known to lead to insanity.

van: You really do not believe the current council is going to contract for a real forensic audit do you? The demograpics of Marco Island are not likely to change unless we rezone major areas. The only industry on Marco Island is tourism. Hotels and small shops do not pay enough for their employees to live on the island. In the unlikely event the ratio of retired folks vs. service providers flips, then the service providers will no longer be needed so they will not move in. The only way to change these facts is to increase opportunities for our only industry, tourism. Build more hotels and tourists will come with money to spend. To build more hotels and make Marco Island a tourist destination, we need to rezone and tear down all those homes on Collier Blvd. opposite the beach. We can then offer up the land for multi-purpose use and build huge hotels within walking distance of our beach. Is this Arceri's motivation for increasing the capacity of our utilities? I expect we will soon see a migration of young workers and their families leaving our community. All those who made their money selling and supporting the real estate market are drawing on thier assests to live. That money will run out soon and you will see our children leave with their parents. So sad.

On City finance committee begins with worst case budget scenario

Mr. Trotter, keep running to the banks and bond markets while you can. They too will shut their doors when they see our City cannot afford to repay the bonds. I know that the taxpayers voted for these improvements when they put you into office. So do what they want you to do; increase their taxes to pay for all the things you told them they couldn't live without. When that doesn't work increase the utility user fees. When that doesn't work put a toll on both bridges. When that doesn't work establish special assessments for safety and security services, recreation, roads and whatever else you can think of. Maybe the city can charge for beach use? When that doesn't work, increase the room tax on hotels and rentals While you are doing all this don't forget to pack your bags. If you are successful in keeping your promise to us, you will be as broke as many of your neighbors and will have to leave too.

We are our own worst enemy. Property Tax revenues go down and the City increases user fees and borrowing to make up the difference. Issler would like to issue bonds to pay for everything. I don't know what bank today can afford to support our city's wants (not needs). In better times this worked but today we do not know how many years of bad times we have ahead of us. The generation that leads us today should be renamed the debtor generation. I wonder if our debts will ever be paid.

STOP SPENDING! Whenever Rony Joel stands up in a meeting I know he will be asking for 1 million dollars before the meeting is over.

On City finance committee begins with worst case budget scenario

Councilman Waldack: If the economy does not change then Marco Island will revert to what it once was. A paradise not being ravaged by a Chamber of Commerce. Revenues will be down in 2009 and again in 2010. Not only will you be limited by the spending cap but the City simply will not have all that money it's used to. Taxable property values are going down, way down. Homes and condos are remaining empty even during the high season. Small business enterprises will close and the Chamber's membership will shrink. No residents, no user fees. What are you going to do?

Mr. Waldack, what in the world is wrong with you? City Councilman are supposed to be looking out for our citizens (you took an oath, didn't you?). You seem obsessed with protecting the staff running the city at the expense of our citizens. We have the right to know when there is potential harm in our community. There is nothing in the Charter that orders City Staff or you to keep information Chamber of Commerce friendly. If something is wrong, you MUST tell us or find out and then tell us. Who do you think you are working for anyway? As for LeRoy and Semper whatever, you guys are probaly employees of the sewer and are protecting your jobs.

LeRoy, wrong again. I really am Fossil and I am a property owner. Issler, you speak in tongues. Exactly what is it that I have said that is not "right"? The only "objectivity" the players appointed to these committees have, is directed at how they can best use our city to line their pockets. JohninMarco, the record is on YOUR side. The same names keep popping up everytime a committee is formed. With all the people on Marco Island you would think our City Council would make an honest effort to recruit other citizens.

On City’s financial planning for 2010 begins early with new committee

Well, I see the good ole' boys managed to get Monte Lazarus appointed. The Chamber is very well represented too. Sorry full-time residents, business and money comes first, you loose again. Why is Harrison even being consided as a consultant? If an audit finds his activities as City Financial Manager questionable, negligent or criminal, wouldn't everything he explains to these neophytes be questionable? Is his real purpose to guide them and keep them on the good ole' boys agenda? Is he being compensated for this?
